Schooling Options
You have quite a choice for schooling in the
Netherlands. Many North Americans place their children in one of two international schools located in
Eindhoven. Some parents on long-term assignments enroll their young children in
the local Dutch elementary schools with much success. This is a very
personal decision. We can not tell you what to do. Below is information
about the international schools. If you would like information about a
local elementary school (basisschool) talk with your relocation specialist,
makelaar, neighbors and or the headmaster at the school.

The
Regional International School (RIS) was established in 1965 to serve the
international community in and around Eindhoven. It is situated in a
modern building in the south-western part of Eindhoven, close to the
city's ring road. Facilities include 28 classrooms, a multi--purpose ball,
library, resource center, gymnasium and sports field.
There are two language departments: Dutch and English. The curriculum of
the Dutch department is compatible with those applied in the Netherlands.
The curriculum of the English department is based on that of England and
Wales extended with international elements. Integration between
departments takes place in the form of optional activities. All class
teachers are native speakers.
Classes are small and children are often taught individually or in small
groups. The children are placed into classes with pupils of the same age.
There are over 30 nationalities represented in the school, children whose
mother tongue is not English are supported by their own teacher and the
ESL staff who work with small groups helping them to develop their
English. The English department has a special educational needs
coordinator
and a curriculum coordinator.
The RIS maintains a good relationship with parents. There is frequent
communication between all the bodies forming the school community. Parents
are represented in the school council. There is a program of after-school activities organized by parents, including scouting and music.
The RIS accepts pupils who have reached the eligible school-going age,
regardless of their nationality, background or religion. |

of Eindhoven
International education
as part of a Dutch national school was first established in Eindhoven in
1974. As of August 1, 1995, it has been part of the Stedelijk College
Eindhoven (2,050 students). Both the Dutch and the International division
are subsidized by the Dutch Ministry of Education and Sciences. The ISSE
caters to international industry in the Eindhoven region. The ISSE offers
an English-language academic curriculum leading to IGCSE certificates at
the end of Year 5 and the IB-diploma at the end of Year 7. Students with
limited English proficiency will first be registered in the intensive
English-as-a-Second language course. First language Japanese is offered at
IGCSE and IB level. The Stedelijk College Eindhoven, in collaboration with
the ISSE, also offers a bilingual VWO program.
School policy prefers the appointment of native speakers of English and
present faculty members hold UK, Irish, Australian, US, Canadian, French
and Japanese university qualifications. Native speakers of Dutch have an
extensive experience in English-medium education in The Netherlands or
abroad. The student body represents 35 nationalities. Lessons start at
09:00 and end at 15:05 or 15:55. The school follows the national Dutch
calendar for holidays.
The CAS component of the IB-diploma stimulates a wide variety of
extra-curricular activities throughout the entire school such as cultural
days and fairs, school concerts, annual musical production, and sports
events.
As of July 7, 1997, the ISSE is housed in a new facility adjacent to the
Dutch department. Its facility consists of 12 classrooms, four science
laboratories, a large art and design studio, a darkroom, a music room, a
computer room with 24 working stations, a language lab and an indoor
sports complex. The library also has computer stations with research
facilities. The careers office is equipped to handle world-wide student
placement.
Admission is granted
following an interview and placement tests and students must have IGCSE
examination potential. In addition, IB applicants must have completed the
IGCSE examination or equivalent successfully.
