Six months after moving to the
Netherlands, we had the opportunity to visit London for a weekend. It was
our first dose of the English language being spoken everywhere. Having
heard only Dutch and not understanding it very well, it was a joy to be able to
speak, read and listen in our native tongue, although be it a bit
accented. We
drove over to England via the Chunnel Train. It took about five hours with
good traffic and weather. The actual train ride under the English channel only takes 25
minutes. We were in Croydon an hour later. l

London
We spent a fun packed two days
in London. We did the basic tourist runs of Buckingham Palace, Big Ben,
Westminster Abbey, Picadilly Circus, The Tower of London and of course Planet
Hollywood. Ryann and Raine wanted to meet the Queen and couldn't understand
why she wasn't there to greet them. The Tower of London is really
cool. It dates back to William the Conqueror in 1066. The
Yeomen or Tower Guards give guided tours. We saw the tower that
Elizabeth I was kept as well as the crowned jewels. The kids liked
the Tower the best of all the sites in England.
Brighton On
Sunday we left London and headed
south to Brighton. We checked out Palace Pier. We drove along the
southern coast of England back to Dover to catch the train. The sheep and goats
really slowed us down. They were always crossing the roads. We
missed our scheduled crossing of the English Channel and had to wait for a later
train. |
