In the spring of 99 we took a four day trip into the Alsace region of France. We traveled with Todd's mom, Mary, and had a great time. Even though most of the wine caves in the Alsace region were closed, we were still able to find a few places to sample and buy two cases of wine. Colmar has a beautifully restored medieval center. Wow. It was really fun walking around the city. The language is French with heavy German accents. Interesting mix of people and architecture. This city is the home of the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who designed the Statue of Liberty. Nancy We stopped in Nancy on our way back to the Netherlands after visiting the Alsace Region. Nancy was a wonderful suprise. We found an art museum with free admission on Sundays. The museum is located within the old city palace center. The museum had pieces by regional artists as well as the masters. Reims The capital of the Champagne region of France. Reims is a hidden jewel in France. Only one hour or so north of Paris, it doesn't get a lot of tourism. The Our Lady of Reims Cathedral is the most beautiful cathedral I have seen in Europe. The first time I walked through it I couldn't get over that it was completely built by hand. Amazing. The first cathedral was built over Roman baths. It burnt down in the 8th century. The current one took like 500 years to build. They don't build like that anymore. They are even catacombs you can walk through. The kids like that. Les Coches Todd went skiing in the French Alps last winter. He went with a group from work. They took a bus for 14 hours, Skied for 2 days and bused back to Eindhoven. The skiing was spectacular.
