Rylee,
Allison and Todd enjoying the scene in Dusseldorf.
The German border is about 40
minutes from our house. We are almost due west of Duisberg. Cologne
(Koln) is about one hour from us. Since we have lived in the Netherlands,
we've traveled several times into Germany. When Todd's mom, Mary was here
we spent a day traveling down the Rhine River. We saw some really
beautiful old castles. And of course, Ryann had bratwurst every chance she
could get. We also took our friends, Allison and Paul to Dusseldorf for
some genuine German beer tasting.
One day
after visiting a kerstmarkt (Christmas Market) in the city of Aachen, we
stopped in a little village to visit a grocery store. You know us Wisconsinites,
we need our brats, sour kraut and egg noodles.
Among, bratwursts, spaetzle, real dill pickles, the shop had Capri Sun, Ryann and Raine's favorite
drink from America. Picture this:
Ryann down on her knees grabbing the Capri Sun and declaring in a rather
loud and adoring voice "I love Germany!!! They have bratwurst and Capri
Sun" It was hilarious.
The clerks just looked at us like we were from outer space.

The
Rhine River The
Rhine River Valley is a beautiful day trip. There are castles all
along the way. Most date back to the 12th to 15th centuries. There
are also little villages, many with medieval centers. It's a fun
time to just meander down the highway and stop in little villages to
soak in the sites Cologne
Or
Koln as it's known in German is a kind of gritty German industrial
town. But it does have its charms. The Cathedral is one of
the tallest in Europe. It's turned black from the pollution but the
inside is beautiful. More
interesting to us, was the German-Roman Museum housed behind the Cathedral. I guess they built the museum after public works
unearthed a roman bath and mosaic floor 20 ft below the sidewalk next to
the cathedral. Today, the museum has thousands of Roman artifacts
found around Germany. Dusseldorf
What a
great city this one is. Largely left in tact after the wars, the
old part of the town next to the Rhine makes for a great afternoon of
beer sipping and people watching. Dusseldorf is about one hour
from our house. Its a great place to take your rollerblades since there
are paths all along the river front.
